10-Year Workmanship Warranty

At Tend Fencing, we take pride in the quality of our craftsmanship and stand behind the work we perform. That’s why we provide a 10-Year Workmanship Warranty to the original purchaser beginning on the date of project completion.

Our warranty covers defects that are directly caused by improper installation or workmanship performed by Tend Fencing. If a problem occurs because of an installation error, we will inspect the issue and, if it is determined to be a covered workmanship defect, repair or correct it at no cost to the original purchaser.

Because fencing is installed outdoors and exposed to weather, changing soil and moisture conditions, seasonal temperature extremes, and natural material changes, no fence can be guaranteed against every condition throughout its lifetime. Our warranty is designed to protect you against defects in our workmanship—not the natural effects of time, the environment, soil movement, or normal material aging.

What Is Covered

Our 10-Year Workmanship Warranty covers defects resulting directly from our installation, including:

  • Improperly installed fence posts

  • Improper fastening or assembly of fence components

  • Incorrect gate installation or alignment due to installation error

  • Structural defects caused by improper workmanship

  • Other installation defects determined to be the result of Tend Fencing’s workmanship

Exclusions

Our workmanship warranty does not cover damage, movement, or failures resulting from conditions beyond our control, including but not limited to:

  • Soil movement, settling, expansion, contraction, or changes in soil moisture, including movement associated with prolonged heat, drought, heavy rainfall, irrigation conditions, or the natural expansion and contraction of North Texas clay soils

  • High winds, tornadoes, hail, flooding, lightning, severe storms, or other acts of nature

  • Falling trees, tree limbs, tree roots, or other landscaping-related movement or damage

  • Vehicle equipment, or other accidental impacts

  • Damage caused by animals

  • Fire, vandalism, abuse, or other acts beyond our control

  • Alterations, modifications, additions, or repairs performed by others

  • Improper use or misuse of the fence or gates

  • Lack of routine maintenance

  • Normal wear and tear associated with aging

  • Natural movement, deterioration, or weathering of wood and other materials
  • Manufacturer defects in wood, metal, hardware, or other materials

Natural Wood Characteristics

Wood is a natural product, and no two boards are exactly alike. As wood ages and is exposed to the elements, it is normal for it to experience:

Normal Characteristics of wood may include:

  • Shrinkage and expansion

  • Surface checking and small cracks

  • Warping, twisting, or cupping

  • Knot movement or separation

  • Changes in texture or appearance
  • Color fading and weathering

These conditions can occur naturally over the life of a wood fence and do not, by themselves, indicate defective materials or workmanship.

Wood deterioration, decay, or failure that develops through natural aging, exposure, moisture, insects, or other environmental conditions is also not considered a workmanship defect.

Understanding North Texas Soil Movement

North Texas is known for expansive clay soils that can change volume as moisture conditions change. During prolonged periods of heat and drought, these soils can dry, contract, and shift. When moisture returns, the same soils may expand. These natural cycles can create movement in structures supported by the surrounding ground.

Homeowners may already be familiar with the effects of soil movement around a home. Changes in soil conditions can contribute to foundation movement that may present as sticking or misaligned doors, cracks in walls or ceilings, or other changes in a home’s alignment. A fence post is also supported by the surrounding soil and can be affected by these same changing ground conditions.

As a result, a properly installed fence or gate may experience movement even when there is no defect in its original installation. This is why movement caused by changing soil or moisture conditions is considered an environmental condition rather than a workmanship defect under the Tend Fencing 10-Year Workmanship Warranty.

Gate Operation

All gates are properly aligned, adjusted, and tested for operation at the time of installation.

Because gate operation depends on the relationship between multiple posts, hinges, hardware, and the gate itself, even relatively small amounts of ground or post movement can change a gate opening enough to affect alignment, clearance, latching, or self-closing operation without the gate or fence appearing to visibly lean.

Natural wood movement can also affect the dimensions and alignment of a gate as materials expand, contract, weather, and age.

Gate adjustments required as a result of soil movement, changes in soil moisture, prolonged heat or drought, seasonal conditions, natural wood movement, normal settling, hardware wear, or regular use are considered routine maintenance and are not defects in workmanship covered by the 10-Year Workmanship Warranty.

If a gate requires adjustment after installation, Tend Fencing is happy to inspect and service it at our current service rates. If the issue is determined to be the direct result of improper installation or workmanship by Tend Fencing, it will be corrected under the terms of our workmanship warranty.

Manufacturer Warranties

Many of the materials we install are manufactured by third parties. Any manufacturer warranty applicable to those products remains subject to the terms and conditions established by the respective manufacturer.
Tend Fencing’s 10-Year Workmanship Warranty applies to our installation and workmanship and does not create an additional material warranty beyond warranties provided by the applicable manufacturer

Recommended Maintenance

Like any outdoor improvement, fences and gates require periodic maintenance to provide the best possible service life.

We recommend that homeowners:

  • Inspect gates, hinges, latches, and other hardware periodically

  • Tighten loose hardware as needed

  • Lubricate hinges, latches, and moving components as appropriate

  • Maintain appropriate drainage around the fence and fence posts

  • Avoid prolonged standing water around posts and fence components

  • Keep excessive vegetation, vines, and debris from accumulating against the fence unless the fence was specifically designed for that purpose

  • Maintain stain, sealant, paint, or protective coatings according to the applicable product manufacturer’s recommendations

  • Address damaged or deteriorating materials before they affect surrounding components

Maintenance needs will vary depending on the fence material, property conditions, weather exposure, and other environmental factors.

Failure to perform reasonable routine maintenance may affect the performance and longevity of the fence and does not constitute a defect in workmanship.

Warranty Limitations

This warranty applies only to the original purchaser and is non-transferable.

The warranty period begins on the project’s completion date and continues for ten (10) years.

The 10-Year Workmanship Warranty covers defects in Tend Fencing’s installation and workmanship only. It does not guarantee that fences, posts, or gates will remain perfectly level, plumb, aligned, or free from movement throughout their service life. Environmental conditions, soil movement, changes in soil moisture, natural material movement, normal aging, and routine wear are outside of our control.

Repair or replacement of a covered item does not extend, renew, or restart the original 10-year warranty period.

PRODUCT MAINTENANCE

While a fence can hold up for quite a while without any care or attention, we advise that you read over these tips to understand how to properly care for your fence. It is necessary that these guidelines be followed to ensure your fence will achieve its full lifetime potential. Our cedar, galvanized, and painted steel products are fabricated and installed to last, however, there is an expiration date on all materials.

The date your fence expires is subject to 4 main things: Materials, Workmanship, Environment, and Maintenance.

  • Warping and Splitting Wood Products – All wood warps and splits to a certain degree, it is an inevitable attribute of the product. Extreme heat amplifies this natural occurrence. Pressure treated pine tends to warp a great deal more than cedar but is a cheaper alternative with the same life expectancy. For this reason, we offer cedar rails as an alternative for those who might have an issue with the look of warped rails. Our cedar rails carry the same warranty as our pressure treated rails. Solution: Proper shade is the only thing that can help solve this problem, however, because providing shade for a fence is not a cost-effective solution, we can only recommend to our customers a fence made of material that can withstand extreme heat better than wood. Consult your salesman about these other alternatives.
  • Paint Maintenance – Iron fences should, in the proper environment, last at least 30 years. Recoating your iron fence with quality paint is an essential step that must be taken to ensure an iron fence reaches this full lifetime expectancy. Solution: Repainting an iron fence every 5 to 10 years, depending on its environment, will give it the protection it needs.
  • Post Shifting – Extreme post shifting is not a common issue, but all posts can shift to a small degree. In the extreme heat of the Texas summer the earth can contract causing the dirt around your posts to pull back, allowing for a gap between the concrete and the surrounding earth, causing your posts to lean, wobble or shift. There are numerous other ways for soil to shift, many of which can simply not be foreseen. Solution: Watering the soil around your posts at least twice a week will help the dirt remain moist, causing the dry dirt to maintain its stability and better support the posts. Keeping the areas surrounding your post covered in grass is another curtail factor in maintaining the moisture content and stability of your soil. It is particularly important that the soil is properly maintained around hinge and latch posts for all types of gates, as the slightest post movement can prevent the gate from working properly.
  • Lawn Sprinklers – Sprinkler heads that are spraying directly on a fence can cause discoloration and decay on wood fences, and premature rusting and corrosion on metal fences. Solution: We strongly recommend that our customers run their sprinkler systems after a new fence installation to make sure that no heads are spraying directly on the fence. Hire an irrigation specialist to redirect the spray direction of the heads if necessary.
  • Standing Water Around Posts -The constant presence of moisture at the base of posts can cause them to rust and corrode prematurely. Soppy soil can also make posts lean or sink into the ground. Solution: If your dirt has poor drainage, or your fence is in an area where water tends to stand for whatever reason, we suggest you consult an irrigation or landscape specialist to find a drainage solution. Proper drainage will help to ensure that your fence lasts through its full lifetime expectancy.
  • Pools – Most pool water contains corrosive chemicals that can deteriorate paint and corrode steel faster than regular water. Solution: Making sure to properly prep and repaint pool fences as soon as the original paint begins to show signs of corrosion is especially crucial to ensure it lasts its full lifetime expectancy.
  • Fading Paint/Stain – All paint fades over time, extreme heat due to direct exposure to sunlight speeds up this process. It may take a fence that is installed in shade twice as long as a fence in direct sunlight to fade considerably. Solution: The only solution to this problem is to repaint/stain the fence that is in direct sunlight more often than the one installed in the shade
  • Growth of Vegetation on Fences –

Iron fence vegetation can rub off paint, and the moisture it retains can cause premature rusting and corrosion to occur. On wood fences vegetation can cause the wood to rot prematurely, and trees and vines can actually separate the fence’s assembled materials from each other. Solution: Keep any sort of vegetation from growing on or even touching any type of fencing material. Also keep soil from having direct contact with fencing material. Keep dirt from building up against any fence product, the moisture retained by soil can cause premature rotting, rust, and corrosion. This is especially important with iron fences
